A Long Walk

One of my Fall Bucket List items was to walk to work at least once. It was a really basic fitness goal and I wanted to do it because the walk would take me through some of my favorite sights in Boston.

The walk is about 5 miles door to door which Google Maps told me would take about and hour and 40 minutes. I’m a slow walker and knew I’d be stopping along the way to take pictures/stretch so I figured two hours would be a better estimate.

I left at 5:40am and cranked my favorite song to start the day: Saves The Day’s Daybreak.

It was really dark when I left the house but the sun started to rise at 6:30am (I should mention that I did this walk pre-daylight savings time).

Once the sun began to rise the sky became the most vivid blue. So pretty as I walked through Kendall Square.

It was full daylight by the time I reached the Mass Ave Bridge. The most notable thing about this bridge is that it is measured in Smoots – the exact length of an MIT student who was the butt of a fraternity prank. The Smoot story is definitely worth a read if you aren’t familiar (just click on that link above).

I was really excited to walk across this bridge on my journey; the views from here are my absolute favorite of Boston.

Just before my final destination I crossed the Mass Pike (I-90) overpass. Such a good view from here too!

The last notable sight on my walk was the very pretty Back Bay Fens. It used to be mostly a swamp but is now community gardens and an urban park/greenspace.

I arrived at 7:30am, almost exactly two hours later so my plan worked out pretty well. I actually walked to my gym, which is two blocks from my office, showered there, and headed to work. I felt pretty good for the rest of the day. My feet hurt a little bit but overall I’m so glad I took on this challenge and I look forward to doing it again!
